This performance will celebrate the release of ‘The Struggle’, the new album from pianist/composer Casey Golden. His eighth album overall, it features a set of hard-hitting original modern jazz that draws influence from artists such as Mark Guiliana, The Bad Plus and Keith Jarrett. Joined by his working quintet, this group of experienced improvisers and eclectic musical personalities expertly balance heavier textures, lyrical ensemble playing and melodic invention, and with an open-mindedness and rhythmic intensity that is undoubtedly of today.
Casey Golden is a forward-thinking musician based in Sydney. Described as ‘a brilliant improviser with a highly developed melodic sensibility’ (The Australian) and ‘a pianist of sheer class’ (Jazzwise), he’s been involved in a wide range of original music ranging from jazz/improvised projects to electronic, pop and film music. He has released seven albums as a leader, always ‘placing honesty, passion, originality and personal experience at the centre of his art’ (Fine Music Magazine). His 2024 album, ‘Present day’ received 5-star reviews in The Australian and Dingo magazine An in-demand sideman as well as accomplished bandleader, Casey maintains a multitude of ongoing performing, recording and touring credits as a pianist, keys player, composer and producer. He has been a finalist in the National Jazz Awards, the Freedman Fellowship, the APRA Professional Development Awards and the Bell Awards.
