About ZOJ:

ZÖJ is an award-winning experimental cross-cultural music duo from Australia, comprising Gelareh Pour (kamancheh, qeychak, voice) and Brian O’Dwyer (drums and percussion). Drawing on Persian musical traditions, contemporary improvisation, and experimental art music practices, the duo creates immersive performances that blur the boundaries between composition and spontaneous creation.

May The Devil’s Ear Be Deaf is an intimate and immersive live performance that explores the fragile space between expression and disappearance. Inspired by a Persian saying used to protect moments of beauty from envy and misfortune, the work unfolds through improvisation, Persian poetry, and a deeply responsive musical dialogue between Gelareh Pour (voice, kamancheh) and Brian O’Dwyer (drum kit).

About Ashkan Shafiei:

Ashkan Shafiei is an Iranian–Australian singer, songwriter, and composer whose music is driven by curiosity, a love of creation, and a constant exploration of musical expression. Drawing from the rich musical traditions of Iran and the wider region, jazz, improvisation, and rhythmic grooves, his compositions bring together soulful vocals, melodic traditions, and a sound that resists easy categorisation.

Ashkan Shafiei and his band bring together Persian melodies, soulful vocals, hypnotic grooves, and the freedom of jazz improvisation. Rooted in Iranian musical heritage but shaped by a constant exploration of musical expression, the performance moves between intimate moments, deep grooves, spontaneous improvisation, and powerful emotional release. Expect music that invites you to listen, move, and get lost in the moment—where rhythm, emotion, and improvisation come together to create a truly immersive experience.
