Resonance in Song and Sound
On 6 July, we were delighted to welcome Laura Altman to Local Edition for a unique performance that showcased her exceptional solo improvisation practices. Based on Gadigal Country in Sydney, Laura navigates through the worlds of improvised, exploratory, and folk music with her intuitive clarinet playing, free improvisation, and song compositions.
For the first time, Laura presented both of her solo practices—improvised clarinet performances and song-writing—side by side. Her performance explored the potential interrelations between these two forms of expression and the role of ‘resonance’ as a unifying thread. Through her experimental use of microphones, speakers, objects, and her voice and guitar, Laura sought to observe how these elements influence one another and how they might converge to create a deeper resonance in her music.
In addition to her solo work, Laura is a longstanding member of the Splinter Orchestra and has performed with the internationally acclaimed Great Waitress. She is also a co-host of the radio program Listening Space on Eastside 89.7FM and coordinates the online music directory emus.space.
We thank everyone who attended this intimate and thought-provoking evening of sonic exploration.
