Eishan Ensemble – Persian Chamber Jazz at Its Finest
On 24 May, Local Edition was graced by the spellbinding performance of the Eishan Ensemble, a group renowned for seamlessly blending contemporary Persian classical music with modern jazz. This unique fusion has captivated audiences across the globe, earning the ensemble glowing reviews. Songlines UK described their music as "a flawless combination" and awarded it four stars, while John Shand of the Sydney Morning Herald praised their work as having "astonishing power and convulsive impact" with an impressive ★★★★½ rating.
Led by the acclaimed Persian-Australian tar virtuoso and composer Hamed Sadeghi, Eishan Ensemble brings together diverse musical influences, creating a sound that transcends traditional boundaries. Their compositions, primarily Sadeghi’s originals, weave intricate modal systems that unite Persian and jazz traditions, delivering a fresh, improvisational flair often referred to as “Persian chamber jazz” or “Middle-Eastern jazz fusion.”
Each member of the ensemble brings a distinct touch to their performances. Saxophonist Michael Avgenicos adds soaring melodies, while Adem Yilmaz on percussion and Maximillian Alduca on double bass create a rich rhythmic foundation. Together, they conjure sophisticated soundscapes that are both intricate and mesmerizing.
Since their formation in 2016, Eishan Ensemble has toured extensively across Australia, Asia, and Europe, performing at prestigious festivals and concert halls. Their exceptional artistry earned them an ARIA Award nomination in 2021 for Best World Music Album, further solidifying their place in the global music scene.
