Rachel Lyn a First Nations Yuin composer who is based in Berlin and Khaled Kurbeh a Syrian composer who is also based in Berlin are visiting Sydney and will be performing. Rachel's music focusses on nature's glitches and sound narratives. And Khaled's music focusses on muhawalāt [attempts, variations] and hawāmesh [sonic footnotes]. They will be supported by Sydney's J.WLSN and JWPATON who both share a love of sonic mangling and smudged atmospheres.

Artist Biography

Rachel Lyn is a Yuin multidisciplinary sound designer born in Australia and currently based in Berlin, Germany. Her work centres on weaving sound into environments and narratives using a combination of modular synthesis, hardware, software and analog video to create distinctive auditory experiences. Each performance is unique and shaped by the space.

Khaled Kurbeh is a Berlin-based musician and composer. In his art practice muhawalāt [attempts] and hawāmesh [sonic footnotes], he experiments with variations, electroacoustic maqām, extended improvisation and conflicting rhythms by layering fragments of field recordings, piano and buzuq. He has released albums on Research Records and !K7 Music imprint Between Buttons. Kurbeh’s work has been presented in Europe, Asia and Australia at Funkhaus, Berlin; Cairo International Film Festival; ISA Gallery, Jakarta; Edinburgh Festival Fringe; Novi Sad Theatre; Münchner Kammerspiele, Munich; Norla Dome, Naarm; New Diorama Theatre, London; and XJAZZ Festival, Berlin.

Khaled’s performance is supported by Goethe Institut.

J.WLSN is the musical project of Jonathan Wilson, a musician and curator who lives and works on Gadigal land in Sydney, Australia. Wilson’s music is based on simple sonic and rhythmic gestures. He works with smudged baroque forms and warps traditional instrumentation (piano, guitar) through simple electro acoustic interventions like tape machines and lofi loopers. Further electronic processing takes place via modular synths and guitar effects that he hopes opens space for contemplation and elation.

JWPATON is a Yuin composer living and working on the unceded lands of the Darug Nation. Using electronics and field recordings Josh explores the contrast between abstract ambience and harsh textures. Carving and smearing analog and digital material to build sound worlds examining the ouroboroi of nature and technology.
